Tennis

Tennis is a racquet sport played between either two players (singles) or two teams of two players each (doubles). It is played on a rectangular court divided by a net. The objective of the game is to hit a ball over the net into the opponent’s court in such a way that they cannot return it successfully. Players use a stringed racquet to strike the ball, which is usually made of rubber and covered with felt.

The game is scored in a unique manner, with points awarded as follows: 0 (love), 15, 30, 40, and game point. A player must win at least four points to win a game and must win at least six games to win a set, with the need to win by a margin of two games. Matches can be played in various formats, including best of three or best of five sets.

Tennis originated in France in the late 12th century and has evolved into a popular global sport, governed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Major tournaments including the four Grand Slam events— the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open—are core to the professional tennis calendar. The sport is known for its emphasis on skill, technique, and sportsmanship.
