Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) previously claimed responsibility for the December 5th attack which left 56 people dead, including doctors and patients.

But in a newly released video, AQAP military commander Qassem al-Rimi claimed the attack on the hospital was the act of one lone al-Qaeda fighter “who disobeyed orders”. The video included an offer to pay blood money to the families of the victims.

The latest apology comes on the heels of an earlier attempt to downplay its initial claims of responsibility and distract attention from the brutality of the attack.

Al-Rimi’s apology is “empty talk”, said Col. Mohammed Hazam, deputy general manager of public relations and moral guidance at the Ministry of Interior.

“If al-Qaeda knows what is right, knows sharia and wishes to apologise, then let them allow the application of God’s sharia by making its elements turn themselves in to the judiciary for it to have its ruling against them, and let them confess about everyone who participated in the crime whether by planning, implementation or funding,” he said.

Following the attack, a Twitter user posted photos showing people “celebrating the martyrdom” of Saudi national Saqr Mohammed al-Qarshi, who was one of the attackers. The user, who claimed to be a relative of the al-Qaeda gunman, also posted several Tweets about the importance of martyrdom.

Meanwhile, another Twitter user also claiming to be a family member posted derogatory remarks against the Yemenis killed in the attack.

Og med en muslimsk mentalitet, hvor alt er delt op i rent og urent og rene og urene er det en ekspeditionssag at myrde løs på sagesløse mennesker.
