Uansvarlighed skal stoppe det nationale ræs mod bunden

Information har talt med  leder af University of Michigans Refugee and Asylum Law Program James C. Hathaway om hans bud på en model for en global omfordelingsmekanisme

Vi bør have et system for ’styret flygtningebeskyttelse’, hvor flygtninge bliver retfærdigt fordelt mellem lande, hvor der derfor ikke er incitament til at lukke grænser og behandle flygtninge dårligt for at skræmme dem væk,« forklarer han til Information.

Måden, professoren vil sikre sig det, er ved, at en flygtning – som for eksempel syriske ’Ahmed’ på illustrationen ovenfor – modsat i dag ikke nødvendigvis skal have permanent ophold i det land, hvor han ankommer og får asyl. Her søger han nemlig ikke asyl hos de statslige myndigheder, men hos en udvidet version af FN’s Flygtningeagentur, UNHCR.

Og opnår han flygtningestatus, vil han på sigt muligvis blive omfordelt og genhuset i et andet land. Det vil blandt andet forhindre, at modtagerlandene lukker grænser og presser flygtninge ud på farefulde ruter.

Så lad os hilse på syriske Ahmed, hvis situation altså illustreres i en tegneserie, som man virkeligt skal se for at tro den

Som man kan se bliver Ahmeds hus bombet og uden et hjem, må han flygte til grønnere egne. Hans forstående kernefamilie, en kvinde, en lille dreng og et spædbarn, vinker farvel til Ahmed. Ahmed ser tilbage på det hjem, hvor det nu synes umuligt for ham at leve - og vinker til sin familie, hans kone, hans lille søn og den lille ny. Der er ingen grund til at sidde lårene af hinanden, når hjemmet er udbombet, så afsted bliver der travet, en lysere fremtid lokker

»Hvis der ikke var nogen indvandringskonsekvenser for den stat, som flygtningen rejser mod – hvis det bare var et sted, hvor flygtningen kunne få adgang til et internationalt system – så ville staten ikke have nogen interesse i at forhindre hendes ankomst,« som James C. Hathaway formulerede det i et oplæg til et forum for EU’s agentur for fundamentale rettigheder i juni.

Ligesom Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen støtter også adjunkt ved Global Refugee Studies på Aalborg Universitet Martin Lemberg-Pedersen en omfordelingsmodel a la Hathaways.

»Kvoteordninger og internationale organer, der kan sætte sig ud over det nationale ræs mod bunden, er vejen frem. Jeg mener ikke selve modellen er urealistisk, der mangler bare politisk vilje,« siger han.

Hvis den enkelte stat ikke mærker konsekvenserne… De idealistiske herrer er altså helt med på at der er tale om konsekvenser for modtagerstaterne ved migration. Så det gælder om at lave et system, hvor alle opfører sig uansvarligt, fordi skønt man kommer til at mærke konsekvenser, så vil man ikke mærke konsekvenserne af sine EGNE handlinger. Et system af gensidig uansvarlighed uden ende.

Ahmed mærker heller ikke konsekvenserne af at flygte fra sin familie. Han flygter videre til Jordan, og “Det skal understreges, at flygtninges illegale grænsekrydsninger og ophold ikke må straffes. Det vil bl.a. ødelægge markedet for menneskesmuglere”. Modtagerlandende vil bl.a. blive ødelagt. I Jordan møder Ahmed så en repræsentant fra en udviddet version af FNs flygtningeagentur, hvorfra han modtager penge og vejledning i uddannelse og integration.

Ahmed skal blive i Jordan i 6 år. Hvis ikke Ahmed er vendt tilbage til sin familie, der nok efterhånden skulle være færdige med at bygge huset op igen, vil FNs flygtningeagentur genhuseham i et nyt modtagerland, afgjort af det internationale kvotesystem ud fra en fordelingsnøgle med parametre, som BNP/indb., befolkningens størrelse og Ahmeds oprindelsesregion.

Det ender lykkeligt for Ahmed, der med kufferten fuld af, hvad ved jeg, modtages med jubel fra venligboerne - eller er det den første bølge, der fejrer forstærkninger? Og familien? Hans kone, hans søn, som nok er i puberteten og det lille spædbarn, der nu venter på sin syvårs fødselsdag? Det skal man nok ikke bekymre sig om, Ahmed er stadig i den våbenføre alder og kan stifte en ny.

Over Broen

“Svensk jødehad gjorde det nemt for Bodnia at droppe »Broen«” skrev Berlingske Tidende. Det “svenske” jødehad “vokser. Især i Malmø, hvor vi optog Broen” forklarede Bodnia det israelske onlinemedie Walla. Det er nyt for Bodnias producer på Broen Bo Erhardt, der ikke havde “oplevet problemer eller utryghed på holdet” - et sandt mysterium. Ifølge Jyllands-Posten fortæller Erhart videre, at der var skyderier hvor “En ung mand skød efter muslimske personer, men ifølge produceren påvirkede hændelsen ikke produktionen”.

Bodnias svenske partner i Broen, Sofia Helin, havde for et par måneder siden, skoset Danmark for ikke at tage flygtninge hertil, i grel modsætning til Sverige, som hun var stolt over. “I skal fandeme tage jer sammen” sagde hun til danskerne og mindedes jødeflugten under 2. Verdenskrig; “En gang havde I brug for at flygte fra jeres land”. Tjah, det er blevet en kedelig tendens at hver gang der kommer invasionsstyrker sydfra, så flygter jøderne den ene eller anden vej over Sundet.

Malmös judiska församling blir mindre för varje år som går. Allt fler judar lämnar staden. Föräldrar vågar inte längre ha sina barn i den judiska förskolan.

När skandinavisk-judiska ungdomsförbundet höll sin årliga nyårsfest i staden vid årsskiftet var säkerheten lika rigorös som vid ett statsministerbesök. Judar över hela världen har under det senaste året samlat in pengar till den ultraortodoxa rabbinen i Malmö och hans familj. De har så höga kostnader för sin privata säkerhet att de behöver ekonomisk hjälp för att kunna bo kvar i Malmö.

Judiska församlingens kursgård i Höllviken, där barn och ungdomar från hela Skandinavien tidigare tillbringade både helger och sommarlov, gapar tom allt oftare efter att barn som varit så unga som i sjuårsåldern tvingats höra hot och glåpord som skrikits utifrån vägen.

Den fejlslagne integration viser sig snart at være det fjerde samfundsproblem. Københavnerne er i oprør efter en rettergang, hvor en gruppe politifolk går fri, på trods af at de har mishandlet en indvandrer til døde. En af de tiltalte bortføres fra sit hjem og forsøgene på at finde ham ender i gadeoptøjer.

Pressen vælger gode historier fra

Det er i Vesten almindeligt at betragte vores medier, som værende mere pålidelige end ikke-vestlig medier. Russiske medier har en klar pro-russisk dagsorden og der er ingen reel markeds- eller demokratisk kontrol. Og sådan er det sikkert også i resten af den gamle østblok, hvor halvfascister som Victor Orban regerer og Romaer forfølges og bøsser ikke kan gifte sig. De vestlige medier selv er helt sikre på deres egen fortræffelighed. Og sådan var det også engang. Vesten var det eneste sted hvor der herskede frihed. Men det er længe siden.

En gruppe kristne kaste overbord til druknedøden af vrede muslimer, kunne man læse. Men det fik ingen konsekvenser for dækningen og vinklingen. Tyskland sorterer migranterne efter religion og etnicitet, ellers kommer de op at slås. Eller rettere, ellers overfalder muslimer ikke-muslimer og nogen gange også hinanden. Ingen synes at bekymre sig for, hvad perspektivet er i det, især hvis de skal herind at bo. Der advokeres for et multietnisk samfund, mens folk flygter fra sekterisk vold. De fleste migranter er ikke fra Syrien, men vinklen er stadig at alle er flygtninge fra krig. Ingen spørger hvilke af de stridende parter migranter støtter hvem de flygter fra eller synes at kere sig over om det overhovedet er relevant. Der er heller ikke noget perspektiv i at de fleste er mænd i den våbenføre alder. Da disse unge mænd aggressivt angreb grænsevagter i Balkan og Slovenien og hvor som helst, blev det til historier om hvorledes kvinder og børn fik tæsk. En migrant kastede brutalt sin kone med et spædbarn i favnen ned på togskinnerne og hoppede derpå selv ned over hende, mens han skreg at han hellere vil have sin og sin families død end ikke at komme til Tyskland - pressen viser at han ligger på togskinner med sin kone og barn mens grænsevagter står tæt omkring, som var det dem, der var de skyldige. Afrikanske migranter stormer spanske grænsehegn og som de løber gennem gaderne for første gang i det forjættede kristne land råber de Allahu Akbar - og ingen spørger hvad de mon mener med det.

Norsk politi fandt billeder af henrettelser og IS-falg hos flygtninge” skrev flere aviser. Det er politiet, der oplyser om deres fund og medierne refererer selvfølgelig politiet. Men så sker der ikke mere. Danske medier har ikke spurgt dansk politi om de har gjort lignende opdagelser. Hvad med andre lande? “Det, som ser alarmerende ud, kan have andre forklaringer end støtte til terrororganisationer” citerer man en leder for den norske sikkerhedstjeneste og så er det vel godt nok. Det kan betyde så meget, ja, men det kan også betyde at vi ikke ved, hvor mange tusind terrorister, og deres endnu flere sympatisører, der lukkes ind.

Og hvis ikke man vil foretage sin egen research, så kan man vel i det mindste vil ungarsk TVs tidligere reportage, hvor man ikke blot ser indholdet, men også har allieret sig med glimrende psykologer til at tolke billederne. Billederne viser unge mænd, der gennem gensidige prygl, gør sig kampklar til at modstå og håndtere smerte, når de når Europa. Og flere billeder af migranter, der går forbi TV stationernes kameraer og gestikulerer en halshugning så selv ikke eksperter burde være i tvivl om, hvad det mon kunne betyde.

En ungarsk journalist spænder ben for en løbende migrant med et barn i favnen. Skandale og det selv om det viser sig at migranten var jihad sympatisør - what are the odds? - forbliver den del af historien kun på blogs og sociale medier. Finsk TV bringer rørende historier fra flygtninge, der fortæller om deres situation. En af flygtningene har ladet sig fotografere før, back in the old country og genkendes, som MVLEHTI fortæller

Jeg sidder og tænker på at vi, eller i hvert fald jeg, er blevet så vant til denne parallelverden, mellem, hvad man selv kan finde på nettet, Youtube, Facebook og flere men mindre fremragende medier, blogs og hjemmesider og så den verden, der tegnes i de danske medier på statsstøtte, at jeg slet ikke stiller spørgsmål til, hvorfor danske medier, ja vestlige medier i det hele taget, slet ikke fokuserer på historier om hvem flygtningene egentlig er, hvad de kommer for og hvad vi allerede kan se af vold og trusler.

Det er jo gode og opsigtsvækkende historier. Men journalisterne vælger at messe kedelige fortællinger om uverificerbare , som kun venstrefløjen ser og det er kun af ren moralsk pligtskyldighed. Journalister har traditionelt set det som et kald at bringe sandheden for en dag. Siden har de set det som et kald at får sandheden til at ændre verden til det bedre. Siden har de retfærdiggjort den gode historie over sandheden, hvis blot den ændrede verden til det bedre. I dag caster de mest sig selv, mest som en dårlig vane, i det selvbillede de har arvet af at se Alle Præsidentens Mænd og Kinasyndromet med det samme skurkebillede af banditter i habitter og det samme billede af ofrenes forhutlede fremtoning. Det er faktisk mageløst at så mange journalister kan være så moralsk ukorrumperede i deres moralske kald, at deres fag ikke lokke med penge og prestige, hvis blot de opfylder fagets mindstekrav. At så mange journalister kollektivt ser helt bort fra indlysende gode historier, fordi de hellere selv vil være gode.

Det politiske konsensus udstikker retning: Lad alt gå sin skæve gang

Mette Frederiksen vil have en plan, baseret på en bred politisk aftale, for “hvordan Danmark hjælper »en fair andel af de flygtninge, der er i verden nu« og sikrer, at mennesker, der kommer til Danmark, også kommer i arbejde”.

Jeg vil tage mig i agt for mennesker, der måtte mene, at de har alle løsningerne. Det har jeg ikke. Det har ingen. Det var der nogen, der påstod i valgkampen. Også her Lars Løkke Rasmussen: Velkommen til virkeligheden. Nu skal du tage dit ansvar på dig. Vis lederskab. Lad os lave en bred politisk aftale. Om asyl og udlændinge. Om reel og markant hjælp til nærområderne og verdens flygtninge

Ja, velkommen til virkeligheden sagde Mette Frederiksen, hvis regering som det første afskaffede grænsekontrollen, endda også til Thulesen Dahl. Og som fra talerstolen nu  ’langer’ “ud efter de omstridte flygtningeannoncer, som regeringen har indrykket i flere udenlandske aviser”. Med ‘fair andel’ mener Frederiksen et EU-kvotesystem, hvor Danmark skal tage imod en hvis del af de muslimske migranter, som Merkel inviterer til Tyskland til afstivning hendes tilsyneladende umættelige behov for

Apropos at tage imod, hvad andre inviterer, så er statsminister Lars Løkke Rasmussen enig med resten af den etablerede afmægtighed. Det er frit for enhver statsleder at invitere muslimske horder til sine nabolande, er det frit for enhver regering, ja alle og enhver at invitere hvem som helst indenfor på andres bekostning da vi alle er “almenmenneskeligt forpligtet”. “Nogle derude skal tage medejerskab”. Staten er derimod ikke forpligtet på at sikre nationens grænser, så det overlades til venligboerne, eller som han betegner ‘civilsamfundet’. Løkke vil holde et topmøde for “en række erhvervs-, lønmodtager- og nødhjælpsorganisationer samt flere virksomheder og uddannelsessektoren”, hvor han vil “teste den vilje”, som disse empater praler af.

Løkke indser at flygtningene vil “være her i en årrække og derfor er det afgørende, at de kommer i arbejde og bliver selvforsørgende”. Løkke er ifølge eget udsagn “et praktisk menneske”, der erkender den realpolitiske virkelighed; når man lukker folk ind i landet, kommer de aldrig ud igen. Det er mere end Thulesen Dahl ser ud til at forstå, når han tror man kan holde dem i lejrene. Derfor kan man lige så godt starte tidligt hvis fejlintegrationen skal have en chance og her er det for Løkke “desværre noget mere komplekst” fordi der ikke er tale om en “ekstremt højtuddannet arbejdskraftreserve” som medierne ellers foregiver. Faktisk er “beskæftigelsesgraden for de syriske flygtninge, der er kommet over de senere år, bare helt ufatteligt lav”. Åh, kun 21% af asylansøgerne i Europa i disse tider er fra Syrien, så måske er det ikke så galt igen - hvis altså ikke det er meget værre.

Det er det politiske konsensus i denne krisetid. Ude af stand til at tage ansvar, ude af stand til at erkende deres fejlslagne politik og projekt. Ude af stand til at handle. Det er hvad vi har sat lid til. Løkke Rasmussen har den fordel at han ikke er rød og derfor ser ‘at der er kommet mange flere til landet, end han med sine “valgløfter kunne have ønsket”. Men så meget desto mere forstemmende at han så alligevel ikke lukker grænsen, men fortsætter med at være tilhænger af det grænseløse EU.

Venstrefløjen tror ikke de flygtninge og migranter, på hvem det vil bygge det nye Vesten, over en dørtærskel. Mistroen til folket er en forlængelse af mistro til folk. Men det er værd at lytte til folk, inden man lukker dem ude, for nissen flytter jo med. Som i de tyske gader, hvor an kan opleve kurdere og tyrkere deltager i et gæstespil om deres hjemlandes vemodige kulturudvekslinger

Fjendtligboerne er flest

Danskerne vil ikke tage imod flere flygtninge, skriver TV2. Det vil Stine Bosse gerne. Hun får “en led smag i munden” af at følge debatten fortæller hun Berlingske Tidende og det er hun bange for, at den kvalificerede udenlandske arbejdskraft også gør, hvis de ser Støjbergs anti-immigrationskampagne. Vi har ikke andre valg end at åbne sluserne for folkevandringen konkluderer Jes Stein Pedersen med en blanding af apati og optimisme i Politiken: “Det er Europas helt store politiske og moralske problem, og vi slipper ikke for at tøjle vores egen skamløse forkælelse, hvis vi skal løse det”

Jeg vil til enhver tid gå på barrikaderne for, at den lille plet, der hedder ’Danmark’, forbliver et civiliseret sted. Problemet er, at Historien med meget stort H banker på, og at vi står foran enorme forandringer, som, uanset om vi vil det eller ej, vil ændre den måde, vi har levet på.

Vi står foran enorme folkevandringer og en enorm indvandring. Og fra både vores egen og andre folk og nationers historie ved vi, at det fra tid til anden kan være nødvendigt at udvandre og dermed befolke områder, som andre har haft for sig selv.

Men inden Politikens læser for pakket kufferten, afsted mod at fortrænge andre folkeslag, leverer Pedersen sit twist,

Se bare på USA, som i løbet af relativt få årtier har ændret kulør. Det nordamerikanske menneske er også rent genetisk ved at blive globaliseret med stor fart. Det sørger kærlighedslivet mellem hvide og sorte og indvandrere fra Latinamerika og Asien for. Det samme vil ske i Europa. Selvtilstrækkelige velstandsnationer som Norge og Danmark kan måske holde stand lidt længere end humane lande som Sverige, men prisen vil blive høj, fordi de lande, der kæmper mest mod indvandring, er dem, der vil lide mest under aldringens byrder. Når USA spås en glorværdig fremtid, er det netop, fordi befolkningen er ung og divers.

Ja, det er os der skal rendes over evne. Det er svært at vide, hvor man skal begynde. “USAs unge og diverse befolkning er ‘Genetisk globaliseret’ via “kærlighedslivet mellem hvide og sorte og indvandrere fra Latinamerika og Asien”… Hvorledes Norge og Danmark formåede at blive velstandsnationer i vores selvtilstrækkelighed forstår man ikke. Ej heller hvorfor folk flygter fra sekteriske konflikter frem for at lade sig blive genetisk globaliseret, der synes at være opskriften på fremtidig vækst, velstand og lykke. Derfor er følgende også uforståeligt

Det er ikke kun grækerne, der lever vildt over evne. Det gør hele Europa, og det holder ikke i længden, at vi ikke vil dele ud af trygheden og velstanden til folk i nød.

Det er således med folk, der lever over evne at de ikke har noget at dele ud af jvf at Grækenland derfor er et skrækeksempel. Politikens Peter Wivel mener ikke blot at Europa er nødt til at dele ud tryghed og velstand, men at folkevandringen ligefrem vil gavne Europa. Hvorfor? Hvordan? Det bliver aldrig forklaret. Det behøver man heller ikke når man kan skelne mellem god kynisme og populisme. God kynisme er ens egne meninger, mens populisme er det man ikke kan lide.

Og medierne kan lide Venligboerne, der straks rykker ud for at ordne haven for eksotiske syrere, noget de aldrig har gjort for forarmede danskere - ligesom venligborgmestrene. De fylder meget i medierne, i Information kørte man således sit eget lille kampagneindslag der med Café Venligbo som hovedperson skulle forsikre de eksotiske masser om at her var ressourcer nok at hente, blot man gider stå med hænderne i lommen. Venligheden oversteg Maher Hosin fra Syrien

Lader til Støjberg skal udtrykke sig i betydeligt kraftigere vendinger. Men venligboerne er ikke blot et dansk fænomen. Eller det er det måske, et rent dansk mediefænomen, men det rækker ud over Stevns og helt til Calais, hvor ph.d. og ekstern lektor ved Sorbonne-universitetet i Paris Caroline Sanchez Boe fortæller TV2, hvorledes civilsamfundet har taget godt imod de massende negre og hjulpet med bad, mad og telefoni. Dette til trods er de desperate for at komme væk fra venligboerne i Calais

We have exchanged the pursuit of peace of the Jews of Europe and their talent for a better future for their children, their determined clinging to life because life is holy, for those who pursue death, for people consumed by the desire for death for themselves and others, for our children and theirs.

What a terrible mistake was made by miserable Europe.

Europeans hate Jews because European national identity from the outset was a dreadful parody of Jewish identity. The first claims to national election came at the crest of the early Dark Ages, from the sixth-century chronicler St Gregory of Tours (538-594), and the seventh-century Iberian churchman St Isidore of Seville….Saints Isidore of Seville and Gregory of Tours were in a sense the Bialystock and Bloom of the Dark Ages, the Producers of the European founding: they sold each petty monarch 100% of the show. One hardly can fault them. Transmuting the barbarian invaders who infested the ruined empire of the Romans into Christians was perhaps the most remarkable political accomplishment in world history, but it required a bit of flimflam that had ghastly consequences over the long term. The filth of the old European paganism accumulated in the tangled bowels of Europe until the terrible events of 1914-1945 released it.”

When real Americans — the kind of Americans who identify with the American Founding — meet real Jews — the kind of Jews who embrace Israel’s past and future — there is an instant sympathy, for Jews remind Americans of what is best in their character: the new mission in the Wilderness, the vision of a new City on a hill. New England was settled in response to the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War, and as many German Protestants — the losers in that war — came to America as Englishmen. When Europeans meet Jews, we remind them of what was worst in their character: the lampoon of Jewish identity that infected European nationalism. The Nazi delusion of a “Master Race, ” after all, was a satanic parody of the Election of Israel. In the past, each European nation that fancied itself God’s instrument on earth set out to humiliate, expel, or even exterminate the Jews, for how could France or Spain or Russia or Germany be the Chosen Nation when the Jews claimed that status? Old Europe hated the Jews because it envied election; New Europe hates the Jews because it eschews election altogether. The old hatred suppurates and boils under the ectoderm of the new hatred.

There is a lot more to it, to be sure: the old Kantian illusion of perpetual peace, what Germans call the “Multi-Kulti” belief that all cultures must have equal outcomes as well as equal opportunities, the whole ideological apparatus of social engineering — these all influence European thinking. But what rattles around in the European cerebrum is less important than what ferments in Europe’s viscera.

After three devastating wars lasting two generations each — the Thirty Years’ War of 1618-1648, the Napoleonic Wars of 1799-1815, and the two World Wars of the 20th century — the Europeans grew weary of their contentious national identities. They agreed to become nothing in particular. Patriotism is an obscenity in Germany, a joke in Italy, a curse in Spain, a relic in England, and a faux pas in France. To declare one’s self a Jewish patriot, a Zionist, transgresses the boundary of civilized discourse in today’s Europe. Personally, I find this disappointing; I speak three European languages apart from English and have nothing to say to anybody in any of them.

So when we hear expressions of sympathy from European leaders who treasure their Jewish communities, but tell Israel not to defend itself against rocket attacks from Gaza, and propose to concoct a Palestinian State without an end-of-hostilities agreement from the Arab side, our instinctive and correct response is to send them to hell. In The Others Spoke, Now I Want to Speak! (the reference is to his former colleagues who – in another un-square-able moment – Eichmann believed had defamed him at Nuremberg) he had the opportunity to write about the recent Suez Crisis.  Here is one passage Stangneth quotes which was new to me at least.

‘And while we are considering all this – we, who are still searching for clarity on whether (and if yes, how far) we assisted in what were in fact damnable events during the war – current events knock us down and take our breath away.  For Israeli bayonets are now overrunning the Egyptian people, who have been startled from their peaceful sleep.  Israeli tanks and armored cars are tearing through Sinai, firing and burning, and Israeli air squadrons are bombing peaceful Egyptian villages and towns.  For the second time since 1945, they are invading… Who are the aggressors here?  Who are the war criminals?  The victims are Egyptians, Arabs, Mohammedans.  Amon and Allah, I fear that, following what was exercised on the Germans in 1945, Your Egyptian people will have to do penance, to all the people of Israel, to the main aggressor and perpetrator against humanity in the Middle East, to those responsible for the murdered Muslims, as I said, Your Egyptian people will have to do penance for having the temerity to want to live on their ancestral soil… We all know the reasons why, beginning in the Middle Ages and from then on in an unbroken sequence, a lasting discord arose between the Jews and their host nation, Germany.’

There then follows an extraordinary and important passage.  For Eichmann goes on to say that if he himself were ever found guilty of any crime it would only be ‘for political reasons’.  He tries to argue that a guilty verdict against him would be ‘an impossibility in international law’ but goes on to say that he could never obtain justice ‘in the so-called Western culture.’  The reason for this is obvious enough: because in the Christian Bible ‘to which a large part of Western thought clings, it is expressly established that everything sacred came from the Jews.’  Western culture has, for Eichmann, been irrevocably Judaised. And so Eichmann looks to a different group, to the ‘large circle of friends, many millions of people’ to whom this manuscript is aimed:

‘But you, you 360 million Mohammedans, to whom I have had a strong inner connection since the days of my association with your Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, you, who have a greater truth in the surahs of your Koran, I call upon you to pass judgment on me.  You children of Allah have known the Jews longer and better than the West has.  Your noble Muftis and scholars of law may sit in judgement upon me and, at least in a symbolic way, give me your verdict.’ [pp 227-8]

Elsewhere Stangneth shows how open Eichmann must have been in his admiration for Israel’s neighbours.  After Eichmann’s abduction his family apparently became concerned about his second son.  According to a police report, ‘As Horst was easily excitable the Eichmann family was afraid that when he heard about his father’s fate, he might volunteer to fight for the Arab countries in campaigns against Israel.’  As Stangneth adds, ‘Eichmann had obviously told his children where his new troops were to be found.’ [229]

Of course for years after the war there were rumours that Eichmann had fled to an Arab country.  He might have had a better time there.  Other Nazis certainly did, including Alois Brunner – Eichmann’s ‘best man’ – who settled in Damascus after the war and who is now believed to have died in Syria as recently as 2010.  Eichmann’s Argentina years were certainly filled with frustration and rage.  What is most interesting is how mentally caught he remained even before he was captured, principally by the impossible conundrum of how to persuade the world to accept what he had done and simultaneously boast about his role in the worst genocide in history.

There is much more to say about this book.  But I do urge people to read it.  Not least for the way in which Stangneth sums up the problem with the only strain of Nazi history which really remains strong to this day.  ‘Eichmann refused to do penance and longed for applause.  But first and foremost, of course, he hoped his “Arab friends” would continue his battle against the Jews who were always the “principal war criminals” and “principal aggressors.”  He hadn’t managed to complete his task of “total annihilation,” but the Muslims could still complete it for him.’

Indvandringen af udenlandske statsborgere er den største til landet nogensinde på ét år, og i forhold til 2008, hvor det hidtil højeste antal udlændinge flyttede til Danmark, er der sket en stigning på 12 procent.

Jeg vil ikke trampe unødigt på heltegerninger men mens medierne krymper sig for at kalde muslimsk terrorisme for sit rette navn (CNNs Christiane Amanpour kaldte de muslimske terrorister for “aktivister“), så er der ingen smalle steder, når det kommer til de sjældne solstrålehistorier. En snarrådig ansat skjulte nogle kunder fra Charlie Hebdo terroristerne og  TV2, som så mange andre, udråber ham til en muslimsk helt

24-årige Lassana Bathily, en muslimsk mand, som er ansat i supermarkedet, bliver nu hyldet som helt, efter det lykkedes ham at gemme adskillige kunder i et fryserum under episoden.

Tegnere og forfattere ved det franske satiriske magasin Charlie Hebdo blev slagtet fordi de tegnede og skrev som de så verden. To politimænd blev myrdet som de forsøgte at udføre deres arbejde med at beskytte borgerne. Endnu fire blev myrdet, ikke for noget de havde gjort eller forsøgt at gøre. De blev myrdet for det de var - jøder.

The least surprising thing about today’s turn of events in Paris is that Jews are the target. Because when it comes to home grown anti-Semitism, France leads the world.

A survey last year from the European Jewish Congress and Tel Aviv University found that France had more violent anti-semitic incidents in 2013 than any other country in the world. Jews were the target of 40 per cent of all racist crimes in France in 2013 – even though they comprise less than 1 per cent of the population. Attacks on Jews have risen sevenfold since the 1990s.

No wonder Jewish emigration from France is accelerating. From being the largest Jewish community in the EU at the start of this decade, with a population of around 500,000, it is expected by Jewish community leaders to have fallen to 400,000 within a few years. That figure is thought by some to be too optimistic. Anecdotally, every French Jew I know has either already left or is working out how to leave.

Natan Sharansky, the former Soviet refusenik who is now chair of the Jewish Agency Chairman, said last year that 2,254 French Jews moved to Israel during the first five months of 2014, against only 580 in all of 2013. That is a staggering 289 per cent increase, but in recent months the figure is thought to have increased exponentially.

The number expected to leave this year for Israel was estimated at over 10,000 – and that was before today’s events. And that is just to Israel. Many are coming to Britain as part of the wider French exodus under President Hollande.

The closure marks the first time since World War II that the synagogue, a Paris landmark, was not open for worship on the Sabbath, according to the Orthodox Union.

“The Jewish community feels itself on the edge of a seething volcano,” said Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Paris-based director for international relations at the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

“Hostages in a kosher supermarket held [up] by an African jihadist, who reportedly already killed two victims,” he said. “The scenes are out of a war movie. But the war is undeclared as long as the sickness is not publicly named as a state of emergency. A culture of excuse exonerates the perpetrators as ‘disaffected, alienated, frustrated, unemployed.’ No other group of frustrated unemployed has resorted to such behavior.”

Angrebet på Charlie Hebdo gik på to ben. Det ene, mordene på tegnerne og forfatterne, skulle undertvinge os islamisk overhøjhed. Det andet, mordene på de fire jøder, varsler et folkemord.

Den arabiske verden knækker under vægten af kognitiv dissonans

Der har den seneste tid været flere gode artikler om den arabiske verdens store krise. Det man optimistisk kaldte for et forår har helt mistet en årstidbetegnelse thi en sådan vil ikke være dækkende. En vinter er jo kun en periode, men flere ser ikke nogen umiddelbar ende på den spiral af kaos, som araberne ser ud til at blive trukket ned i. Den libanesiske Hisham Melhem skrev den glimrende artikel Barbarians Within Our Gates for Politico Magazine

Arab civilization, such as we knew it, is all but gone. The Arab world today is more violent, unstable, fragmented and driven by extremism—the extremism of the rulers and those in opposition—than at any time since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire a century ago. Every hope of modern Arab history has been betrayed. The promise of political empowerment, the return of politics, the restoration of human dignity heralded by the season of Arab uprisings in their early heydays—all has given way to civil wars, ethnic, sectarian and regional divisions and the reassertion of absolutism, both in its military and atavistic forms. With the dubious exception of the antiquated monarchies and emirates of the Gulf—which for the moment are holding out against the tide of chaos—and possibly Tunisia, there is no recognizable legitimacy left in the Arab world.

Is it any surprise that, like the vermin that take over a ruined city, the heirs to this self-destroyed civilization should be the nihilistic thugs of the Islamic State? And that there is no one else who can clean up the vast mess we Arabs have made of our world but the Americans and Western countries?

No one paradigm or one theory can explain what went wrong in the Arab world in the last century. There is no obvious set of reasons for the colossal failures of all the ideologies and political movements that swept the Arab region: Arab nationalism, in its Baathist and Nasserite forms; various Islamist movements; Arab socialism; the rentier state and rapacious monopolies, leaving in their wake a string of broken societies. No one theory can explain the marginalization of Egypt, once the center of political and cultural gravity in the Arab East, and its brief and tumultuous experimentation with peaceful political change before it reverted back to military rule.

Nor is the notion of “ancient sectarian hatreds” adequate to explain the frightening reality that along a front stretching from Basra at the mouth of the Persian Gulf to Beirut on the Mediterranean there exists an almost continuous bloodletting between Sunni and Shia—the public manifestation of an epic geopolitical battle for power and control pitting Iran, the Shia powerhouse, against Saudi Arabia, the Sunni powerhouse, and their proxies.

There is no one single overarching explanation for that tapestry of horrors in Syria and Iraq, where in the last five years more than a quarter of a million people perished, where famed cities like Aleppo, Homs and Mosul were visited by the modern terror of Assad’s chemical weapons and the brutal violence of the Islamic State. How could Syria tear itself apart and become—like Spain in the 1930s—the arena for Arabs and Muslims to re-fight their old civil wars? The war waged by the Syrian regime against civilians in opposition areas combined the use of Scud missiles, anti-personnel barrel bombs as well as medieval tactics against towns and neighborhoods such as siege and starvation. For the first time since the First World War, Syrians were dying of malnutrition and hunger.

A byproduct of the depredation of the national security state and resurgent Islamism has been the slow death of the cosmopolitanism that distinguished great Middle Eastern cities like Alexandria, Beirut, Cairo and Damascus. Alexandria was once a center of learning and multicultural delights (by night, Mark Twain wrote in Innocents Abroad, “it was a sort of reminiscence of Paris”). Today Alexandria is a hotbed of political Islam, now that the once large Greek-Egyptian community has fled along with the other non-Arab and non-Muslim communities. Beirut, once the most liberal city in the Levant, is struggling to maintain a modicum of openness and tolerance while being pushed by Hezbollah to become a Tehran on the Med. Over the last few decades, Islamists across the region have encouraged—and pressured—women to wear veils, men to show signs of religiosity, and subtly and not-so-subtly intimidated non-conformist intellectuals and artists. Egypt today is bereft of good universities and research centers, while publishing unreadable newspapers peddling xenophobia and hyper-nationalism. Cairo no longer produces the kind of daring and creative cinema that pioneers like the critically acclaimed director Youssef Chahine made for more than 60 years. Egyptian society today cannot tolerate a literary and intellectual figure like Taha Hussein, who towered over Arab intellectual life from the 1920s until his death in 1973, because of his skepticism about Islam. Egyptian society cannot reconcile itself today to the great diva Asmahan (1917-1944) singing to her lover that “my soul, my heart, and my body are in your hand.” In the Egypt of today, a chanteuse like Asmahan would be hounded and banished from the country.

The jihadists of the Islamic State, in other words, did not emerge from nowhere. They climbed out of a rotting, empty hulk—what was left of a broken-down civilization. They are a gruesome manifestation of a deeper malady afflicting Arab political culture, which was stagnant, repressive and patriarchal after the decades of authoritarian rule that led to the disastrous defeat in the 1967 war with Israel. That defeat sounded the death knell of Arab nationalism and the resurgence of political Islam, which projected itself as the alternative to the more secular ideologies that had dominated the Arab republics since the Second World War. If Arab decline was the problem, then “Islam is the solution,” the Islamists said—and they believed it.

At their core, both political currents—Arab nationalism and Islamism—are driven by atavistic impulses and a regressive outlook on life that is grounded in a mostly mythologized past. Many Islamists, including Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood (the wellspring of such groups)—whether they say it explicitly or hint at it—are still on a ceaseless quest to resurrect the old Ottoman Caliphate. Still more radical types—the Salafists—yearn for a return to the puritanical days of Prophet Muhammad and his companions. For most Islamists, democracy means only majoritarian rule, and the rule of sharia law, which codifies gender inequality and discrimination against non-Muslims.

And let’s face the grim truth: There is no evidence whatever that Islam in its various political forms is compatible with modern democracy. From Afghanistan under the Taliban to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and from Iran to Sudan, there is no Islamist entity that can be said to be democratic, just or a practitioner of good governance.

Islam’s scriptures, specifically its “twin pillars,” the Koran (literal words of Allah) and the Hadith (words and deeds of Allah’s prophet, Muhammad), were inaccessible to the overwhelming majority of Muslims.  Only a few scholars, or ulema—literally, “they who know”—were literate in Arabic and/or had possession of Islam’s scriptures.  The average Muslim knew only the basics of Islam, or its “Five Pillars.”

In this context, a “medieval synthesis” flourished throughout the Islamic world.  Guided by an evolving general consensus (or ijma‘), Muslims sought to accommodate reality by, in medieval historian Daniel Pipes’ words,

translat[ing] Islam from a body of abstract, infeasible demands [as stipulated in the Koran and Hadith] into a workable system. In practical terms, it toned down Sharia and made the code of law operational. Sharia could now be sufficiently applied without Muslims being subjected to its more stringent demands…  [However,] While the medieval synthesis worked over the centuries, it never overcame a fundamental weakness: It is not comprehensively rooted in or derived from the foundational, constitutional texts of Islam. Based on compromises and half measures, it always remained vulnerable to challenge by purists (emphasis added).

This vulnerability has now reached breaking point: millions of more Korans published in Arabic and other languages are in circulation today compared to just a century ago; millions of more Muslims are now literate enough to read and understand the Koran compared to their medieval forbears.  The Hadith, which contains some of the most intolerant teachings and violent deeds attributed to Islam’s prophet, is now collated and accessible, in part thanks to the efforts of Western scholars, the Orientalists.  Most recently, there is the Internet—where all these scriptures are now available in dozens of languages and to anyone with a laptop or iphone.

In this backdrop, what has been called at different times, places, and contexts “Islamic fundamentalism,” “radical Islam,” “Islamism,” and “Salafism” flourished.  Many of today’s Muslim believers, much better acquainted than their ancestors with the often black and white words of their scriptures, are protesting against earlier traditions, are protesting against the “medieval synthesis,” in favor of scriptural literalism—just like their Christian Protestant counterparts once did.

Thus, if Martin Luther (d. 1546) rejected the extra-scriptural accretions of the Church and “reformed” Christianity by aligning it more closely with scripture, Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab (d. 1787), one of Islam’s first modern reformers, “called for a return to the pure, authentic Islam of the Prophet, and the rejection of the accretions that had corrupted it and distorted it,” in the words of Bernard Lewis (The Middle East, p. 333).

The unadulterated words of God—or Allah—are all that matter for the reformists.

Note: Because they are better acquainted with Islam’s scriptures, other Muslims, of course, are apostatizing—whether by converting to other religions, most notably Christianity, or whether by abandoning religion altogether, even if only in their hearts (for fear of the apostasy penalty).

Men nu ser vi den. Vi ser, at det hele er noget lort på de kanter. Og vi ser noget andet og endnu værre – for os: At vi ikke evner at forvare os mod opløsningen af den arabiske civilisation. Deres ødelæggelse kan blive vores ødelæggelse. Vi importerer den nemlig.

Her tænker jeg ikke kun på de varme lande som arnested for radikalisme og jihad. Det er næsten for banalt, her er dagens episode. Næ, jeg tænker naturligvis også på den voksende strøm af flygtninge og asylansøgere, der vandrer mod Europa – og for de flestes vedkommende – kommer frem og opnår en eller anden ret til at være her – på de europæiske skatteyderes regning.

Hvem skal redde araberne fra sig selv?

Hvorfor peger flaskehalsen på os? Hvorfor er det ikke kinesernes opgave, de er trods alt de kommende, globale magthavere? Hvorfor kigger ingen på Latinamerikas ansvar, de vil for helvede også gerne handle med araberne? Hvorfor kan Putin køre friløb? Og mere graverende: Hvorfor er det ikke araberne, der løser arabernes selvskabte problemer?

Du ved godt hvorfor. Det er kun i Vesten, at vi har fået den tro, at vi og ingen andre kan løse alverdens problemer lige fra nødhjælp til geopolitik. Det er os, dvs. vores nedarvede humanisme, der i generationer har ledt Vesten på vildspor og skabt en grænseløs, universel samvittighed hinsides alle sociale konsekvenser i hjemlandene og gjort menneskerettighedskonventioner til guddommelige anvisninger.

Dér ligger hunden begravet, og det er på tide at sige det ligeud, som det er: Det er os selv, ikke araberne, der har gjort den kroniske arabiske borgerkrig til USA’s, Storbritanniens, Australiens, Canadas, Hollands, Sveriges og Danmarks evige problem. Vi vil og skal hjælpe, koste hvad det koste vil, herunder vores egen deroute.

Deroute er egentlig for venligt et udtryk. Det er ikke alene den arabiske civilisation, der forsvinder for øjnene af os, men tillige vores egen kultur, der synker sammen i bestræbelsen på at spille Jesus, imens vi tillader, at arabere, der tydeligvis ikke vil Danmark eller det land, der har givet dem eller deres forældre en ny chance, huserer som grever og baroner på gader og stræder og opfører sig, som var de herrer i vores hus.

Mærk dig disse dage, det er dage, der forandrer verden, herunder din egen. Tiderne skifter, jeg siger det bare.

Ingen milde sæder kommer af disse tiders skiften dog.

Det muslimske sind

Jeg har undgået at høre de sædvanlige forklaringer på, hvorfor unge mænd (muslimer) fra Vesten drages af ekstremisme (islam) og kan finde på at drage i hellig krig (jihad) i Syrien og Irak. Det afhænger ikke af sociale eller uddannelsesmæssige forhold, ej heller af niveauet af muslimskhed i opvæksten. Det handler blot om at være muslim og kæmpe for islam, som man kan læse ud af en rimeligt serøs artikel (fra fremtiden) i Economist

Western fighters often seem to jump at the chance to take part in a fight or help build a new Islamic state. The Soufan Group, a New York-based intelligence outfit, reckons that by the end of May as many as 12,000 fighters from 81 nations had joined the fray, among them some 3,000 from the West (see chart). The number today is likely to be a lot higher. Since IS declared a caliphate on June 29th, recruitment has surged. Syria has drawn in fighters faster than in any past conflict, including the Afghan war in the 1980s or Iraq after the Americans invaded in 2003.

The beheading on or around August 19th of James Foley, an American journalist, by a hooded fighter with a London accent, has put a spotlight on Britain. In the 1990s London was a refuge for many extremists, including many Muslim ones. Radical preachers were free to spout hate. Britain remains in many ways the centre of gravity for European jihadist networks, says Thomas Hegghammer of the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment. “The radical community in Britain is still exporting ideas and methods.”

While the overwhelming majority of foreign fighters in Syria are Arabs, Britons make up one of the biggest groups of Western fighters. But Belgians, Danes and others have a higher rate per person (see left-hand chart above). France, which has tighter laws against extremism, has also seen more of its citizens go off to wage jihad.

IS is not the only group Westerners join, but it is the most appealing thanks to its global outlook, which includes spreading the caliphate across the world, to its attempts to implement immediate sharia law—and to the glow of its military success.

Those who talked of defending Syrians now deny that the land belongs to the locals, says Shiraz Maher of ICSR. “Bilad al-Sham”, or Greater Syria, has a special status in Islam because it appears in end-of-time prophecies. It belongs to Allah, fighters declare. But what if Syrians do not want Islamic law? “It’s not up to them, because it’s for Islam to implement Islamic rule,” says the European fighter who says he left his home country because it was not Islamic enough. He says he wants to “educate rather than behead Syrians”.

Most of IS’s ideas and all of its gorier methods are rejected by most Muslims, who see the group simply as criminal. But it does draw on Islamic theology, arguing—for instance—that non-Muslims should pay jizya, a special tax.

Hvad muslimer tænker (eller, hvad journalisten ønsker de tænker) er som sagt uden betydning: “It’s not up to them, because it’s for Islam to implement Islamic rule”.

Many say they feel more comfortable in a country where the way of life is Islamic—even if not yet Islamic enough—and have no plans to leave or carry out attacks elsewhere. “I am much happier here—got peace of mind,” says the European fighter.

But others who have gone to Syria to battle against Mr Assad have become disillusioned, says Mr Neumann. They worry about infighting and about killing other Muslims. “This is not what we came for,” they tell him.

Der er selvfølgelig variationer i antallet af muslimer fra forskellige lande og retninger og etniciteter som der også er det i bevæggrundende. Og det er hvad der er tale om, variationer, som der altid vil være når der er tale om mennesker. Men variationerne er over et tema, islam, og trenden er klar. Det er en folkelig bevægelse. Man har råbt ad fontes og uagtet hvad en spinkelt flertal måtte mene er almindelig fornuft, som Vesten har inspireret til så er islam islam og man må tage hele pakken - det er ikke op til en selv.

Men variationerne vil være halmstrå til allehånde bortforklaringer om at det intet har med islam at gøre (som jeg lige hørte David Cameron gentage i TV - forstår politikerne vitterligt ikke at de udhuler deres påstand når de tvinges til at slå den fast igen og igen og igen?), at vi har en ansvar og derfor også evnen til at ændre, hvad der ikke behøver at være sådan. Det er ikke monstre, der tager kravet om jihad alvorligt, det er almindelige mennesker, der er muslimer. Som regnvejr reducerer antallet af demonstranter, således betyder faciliteterne også noget for, hvilke kampe man vælger at tage

But junk food is in ample supply, tweets a Swedish fighter, more happily. And there is a lot of time, sometimes days on end, for “chilling”, says the European fighter on Kik, a smartphone messaging app. That is when he makes “a normal-life day: washing clothes, cleaning the house, training, buying stuff”. Thanks to satellite internet connections, the continuing flow of goods into the country and the relatively decent level of development compared with elsewhere in the region, Syria is a long way from the hardship of Afghanistan’s mountains. Last year, to attract others to come, jihadists tweeted pictures with the hashtag “FiveStarJihad”.

Kedsomhed nævnes også som en del af forklaringen, men det kan kun påvirke variationen (hvorfor keder muslimer sig så ekstremt?)

More plausible explanations are the desire to escape the ennui of home and to find an identity. “Some individuals are drawn out there because there is not a lot going on in their own lives,” says Raffaello Pantucci, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, a London think-tank. Images of combatants playing snooker, eating sweets and splashing in swimming pools have sometimes suggested that jihad was not unlike a student holiday, without the booze. For young men working in dead-end jobs in drab towns, the brotherhood, glory and guns seem thrilling. Many of Belgium’s fighters come from the dullest of cities, where radicals have concentrated their efforts to get recruits.

Choudhury, 31, who once ran a Muslim youth group, has been accused of being the ringleader, blamed for recruiting his friends. Others suggest he was simply a willing volunteer, a married father with two children, aged five and two, who was disaffected with life in Britain and desperate for a change of scene.

He had worked for an insurance company and then his local council as a racial awareness officer. But he was also a con artist, who had tricked his own family out of tens of thousands of pounds.

In 2010, he conned them out of £25,000, under the false pretence of needing treatment for cancer, to go to Singapore, not once but twice for surgery.

Once there, Choudhury, who was in perfect health, spent the money on prostitutes costing £200 a night, his penchant for young women revealed in text messages discovered by police.

Back in Portsmouth, he resumed the habit. He went on what he called “lads’ holidays” to Morocco three times and twice more to Singapore in 2011 and 2012, while at the same time downloading lectures by extremist preachers, extolling the virtues of an Islamic caliphate. To atone for his sins, Choudhury decided to embark on a holy war.

Jaman, a former worker in a Sky customer service call centre, whose parents owned an Indian takeaway restaurant in Portsmouth. He had studied at an Islamic boarding school in London, but life in a call centre proved boring and un-demanding. In May last year, he went to Syria and began recruiting his eager friends. In messages posted on Twitter and other internet sites, he painted a romanticised version of life on the front line, boasting of a “five star jihad”.

A month before he went, Choudhury asked Jaman what kind of gun he could buy for £50. “I had a hand gun but it’s not a great one. I bought it [for] $30,” replied Jaman in messages seized by British police while building up their case against Choudhury.

Once the men landed in Turkey, they were met by an intermediary who took them overland to the Syrian border. From there, they crossed the border easily and were driven straight to an abandoned hospital in Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city, and scene of ferocious fighting.

“You could tell it was an abandoned building with broken pipes and wires,” Choudhury said at his trial at Kingston Crown Court. “No one spoke English. We had a meal of pasta and whilst eating, the table was shaking from the shelling.”

He said he was made to do the cooking and washing and look after children in a makeshift nursery. He had gone with grand ambitions.

In a series of tweets on September 16 and 17 last year, he wrote: “Leaving wife & kids behind for Jihad… All my life I strived to be something, someone, but isn’t being a Muslim something, someone. Isn’t being a Muslim the best thing ever?… The life of this world is nothing but a sweet poison that quenches the thirst of desire and drags the ungrateful soul deeper into Hell!” But in Syria he had become quickly disaffected.

Triste skæbner, nogle dør, andre kan ikke klare og nogle bliver sat til at skure lokummer. Og så vil man hellere bruge 2000 kroner på en luder men kun 500 kroner på et våben når man skal i krig. Men kedsomhed? Kone og børn og et produktivt liv tilfredsstiller ikke muslimen? Hvorfor?

Drømmen om jihad er depraveret ifølge Firatnews, der har set en dokumentar med det passende navn “Gang of Degenerates” (der skal tages forbehold for sandhedsværdien af det følgende, men måske er det historier om hvad man hygger sig med på en sådan “jihad student holiday” der drager?)

Attention was drawn in the documentary to the fact ISIS’s most effective weapon is its ability to create fear and terror by means of its methods, such as random killings regardless of gender, age, religion or ethnicity, its decapitations, rapes and burying people alive. The gangs do not feel a need to conceal what they have perpetrated, on the contrary they publish their atrocities so that more people can see them.

The most lurid part of the documentary was the part in which gang members gave their ‘marriage’ numbers in addition to their names and ISIS membership numbers. For instance, Cinêd Cemîl Silêman said his membership number was 333, while his marriage number was 583.

Mihemed Sebah Hebe? said his membership number was 500, and his marriage number was 400.

The ISIS members admitted that what they called ‘marriage’ was in fact rape. They said that every new member of the organisation was raped. The footage of the rape would be used as blackmail in the event of the new recruit refusing to participate in actions.

20-year-old Ferhan Salim Unûf Safên said he had been abducted by Silêman Kohnê, Ebû Qûteybe and Cinêd Cemîl and suffered multiple rapes. “I fainted. When I came round they told me: ‘you are now with ISIS in Jazaa.’ They told me to join. I said it was not possible. They did terrible thiungs to me. Things even the Americans didn’t do in Abu Graib. Things even the Israelis haven’t done to the Palestinians. I’m ashamed to explain them. There were 6 or 7 of them. Their faces were covered. They ‘married me’ about ten times!”

Ebdulkerîm Îbrahîm Bazo said ‘marriage’ was a rule in order to be a member of the organisation. Bazo said the ‘wedding’ was carried out like a ceremony, adding: “those who did it to me said I had gained morale and strength to fight.”

Bazo added that the footage recorded was used as blackmail. He said: “Silêman Kohnê took me to a village, where my ‘marriage’ was performed by Hecî Newaf Mele Mehmûd. They blindfolded me and carried out the wedding. About a fortnight later they came and said I had to participate in the organisation. I didn’t want to. But they had the footage. They threatened to show it to my family.”

Ehmed Hisên explained horrifying incidents; “I’m from the Sharbaniyan tribe in Malikiyê (Derik). Silêman Kohnê proposed that I join ISIS some time ago. But I told him I was newly married and did not want to be involved in such things. I was then abducted and drugged. When I came to I was in a room which stank terribly. They wouldn’t let me leave the room. Five people came in and told me I should join the organisation, I refused. Then they tortured me. They extinguished cigarettes on my body. Such things were not done to Iraqis at Guantanamo. You would think I was an infidel. They blindfolded and stripped me. They ‘married’ me 15 times. Then they washed my head and put cologne on me. They told me no one could join ISIS without being married. Then they recited very strange verses of the Quran. As they spoke I imagined images of severed heads. They spoke academic Arabic.”
